The Best Bar in America
My dad and I went to Nye’s Polonaise Room for dinner and drinks last night. Casually, my dad mentioned reading that the accordion player had died recently. We found out from the host that it was true; Ruth Adams – infamous for playing a mean accordion and barking during the “Barking Dog Polka” – passed away last week. Further, we found out that “Sweet Lou” Snider – the long-time piano player in the other bar – has retired.
All things, good and bad, must end. I’m just glad that I was able to experience Nye’s – one of the unquestionably good things in life – the way it was meant to be experienced.
I think it fitting to link to the famed Esquire story about Nye’s. If you haven’t been, go. Just know that it won’t be the same as it was when Ruth and Lou were behind their respective instruments.
